Enjoying a Roller Derby Bout

You would think that showing up, finding your rink side seat and waiting for the first whistle is all you would need to know about enjoying a roller derby bout, right? Well as it turns out there are a few more things you should know to make sure you get the most bang for you buck and how to be an active participant in all the fun of a BCR home bout:

What is Roller Derby?

Our roller derby bouts offer a little something for every fan regardless of age. Everyone loves the big hits and crazy falls and sports nuts love the sensory overload of simultaneous offensive and defensive play. Each Burn City Roller Girl practices up to 5 times a week to stay in excellent shape to ensure our fans an exciting night of non stop derby action; because we play hard… we play to win!

Our skaters are always accessible for photos, signatures and fan interaction after the bout. You can also follow your favorite jammers and blockers throughout the entire season via Facebook, Twitter and of course right here!

What to bring

  • Camp chairs for rink-side seating! If you want to risk a skater falling into your lap – sit at the end of the turns. (Suicide Seating for 18 and Up ONLY!)
  • Your friends, family, and kids.
  • Money for food, beverages, wonderful Roller Derby memorabilia and halftime games. There are always delicious refreshment available at the concession stand!
  • A derby team shirt (Don’t have one? Buy one at the bout!).
  • Signs supporting your favorite skater or group of skaters.
  • Cameras
  • Noise makers (cow bells are a crowd favorite – no whistles, please)
  • A pen to get skater autographs on your program or clothing.
  • Dancing shoes, if you plan to join the after party.

When to arrive

At a typical BCR home bout doors open at ?pm and the “first whistle” occurs at ?:30pm. Our home bouts include two 30 minute periods and a halftime break:

  • Period 1: Burn City Rollers vs. visiting team
  • Halftime
  • Period 2: Burn City Rollers vs. visiting team

After the bout follow us to our After Party! Join us and the visiting team and dance the night away at one of our favorite watering holes! (21 and Up) Directions will be in your program.

    Around The Rink

    Fresh Meat 2012

    We keep mentioning how hard we’re training in the off season – well, part of that reason is that we want to bring you a brand new crop of skaters for the 2012 season! We’ve been toughening them up since last September, and now we’re ready to introduce them to you.

    We’re first of all happy to announce that Sabrina Straightrazor and Voluptuous Vixen will be rejoining the Burn City Rollers active roster for this season, along with transfer first-season skater Dame of the Grohl Age. Newcomer Fight Blaze has fought her way through her assessments and will be joining Burn City on March 24 as we face Hattiesburg. Mow’Her Down and Rojo Wrecksy, both of whom have been training hard in anticipation of taking the track, will also be on the bouting roster soon. Eliza BringIt will also be bringing her refined derby ass-kicking to the oval soon. Last but not least, newcomers Casstastrophe and Helena are currently working through scrimmage assessments and preparing themselves for the WFTDA safety test in the coming months.

    Burn City Rollers are proud of all their fresh meat this season and can’t wait to bring them to a bout near you!
