Fine folk of Burn City, we’re not even giving you a month to relax before we’re bringing you more ball-bearings to the wall roller derby action at the Skate Center! On May 19th, you can see your favorite hometown derby team take on the Rome Rollergirls out of Rome, Georgia.

You all know the drill – the Skate Center is located at 1221 Commerce Drive in Auburn. Come in at 4:00 for your choice of seats, and the action will start at 4:30 sharp! Tickets are $7 at the door, but if you want to get in for the low price of five bucks, make sure to see your favorite derby girl for a presale ticket. All Skate Center action is BYOC (Bring Your Own Chair). Suicide seating is available on the skate floor for our guests who are 18 and up, but kids are welcome too! Children under 10 will get free admission if they arrive with an admission-paying adult.

Did we mention this is our last bout at the Skate Center this season? That’s right – if you want to see the Burn City Rollers in Auburn, you have to make it out for this one! The remainder of our home bouts will take place in Columbus, Georgia, so you don’t want to miss this opportunity to see us battle it out on our home turf – will Rome show us how it’s done when in Rome? Or will they come all the way to Burn City and go home singed?

You’ll have to be there to find out. You know what they say: we’ll sell you the whole seat, but you’ll only need the edge.

Saturday April 28th Auburn’s Burn City Rollers will face off against the Savannah Derby Devils. It’s time to kick the tires and light the fires because this one is going to be hot!

We first asked Amyn to reflect for us on her time with the team, and how the team has changed in those years. She told us that “over the last four years we as a team have had our ups and downs, with high turn over rates because of us being in a college town, but we as a team have banded together to keep our team strong and we will have another great season this year. Our team has evolved from a team that was learning the world of derby in the beginning to a team with talented veterans and fresh meat with huge hearts and ambition that will carry this team for seasons to come.”

As for this season, Amyn says that she is “excited for this season because I am ready to share the love of the sport I have with all the newer people (skaters, refs, volunteers, and fans). I am also excited to see the progress that the newer skaters make and the team as a whole!” She says further that she is looking forward to Burn City’s schedule this season because “we are going to be able to host new teams as well as go to new places and I am excited about that.”

When I asked Amyn about Burn City’s difficult 2011 season, she was forward-looking. Amyn admits that “our problems from last season were contributed to by the lack in knowing each other well enough on the track.” Amyn, though, is confident that the team will be able to move forward in 2012, and she says that “over the off season we prepared ourselves by stepping up our communication and training our new players to the best of our ability.”

As for the Hattiesburg game in specific, Amyn is excited to play a team that Burn City Rollers has not met on the track since 2010. She says that “they have some great girls on and off the track and I think it’s going to make for a great game to watch.” The last time Burn City and Hattiesburg met was in Hattiesburg, so local fans will be getting a treat, as they’re able to see Burn City play a team who has never visited the loveliest village on the plains.

Lastly, Amyn offered us a little bit of derby philosophy. Of her role as a team captain, Amyn said that “I have heard many times that to be a great team you have to have a great leader, but I believe to be a great leader you have to have a great team… and I have an amazing team. I only hope that over the last three seasons I have done a good enough job as captain to hang with these girls and I hope by doing so that we will continue to grow and prosper in this sport together.”

She also offered some advice to her teammates about the 2012 season. Amyn says that “I would tell all the girls going into their first season and even the girls going into their 2^nd, 3^rd, or 4^th season just to have fun. Don’t let the competitive nature of this game be all that drives you in this sport. Remember to cherish the moments you have with your teammates and others who share the love of the sport. Learn as much as possible at practice, give it your all and never give up during bouts, and party harder than you ever have before afterwards.”

Today’s bout against the Hub City Derby Dames will begin promptly at 4:30 pm. The doors open at 4 if you want to see Amyn and the rest of the Burn City Rollers open the 2012 season against a fantastic team. It’s bout that time!

On March 24, the Burn City Rollers will open their home season versus Hub City Derby Dames out of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The two teams have met before, back in 2010, but not on BCR’s home turf – it’s safe to say that a lot has changed about both rosters since then!
As always, The Skate Center at 1221 Commerce Drive in Auburn will be our host. Doors open at 4pm and the bout will begin at 4:30 sharp. Kids are welcome, and little ones under 10 get in free with the purchase of an adult ticket. Seating is limited, so please bring a chair if you’d like a seat – unless you’d like to brave our suicide section, which is reserved for guests 18 and up. And if the bout is not enough action for you, you can join us at the after party afterwards (location to be provided at the bout).

Burn City Rollers will be debuting our brand spankin’ new 2012 roster, featuring all your favorite veteran skaters like Amyn Atcha and Babe E. Quakes, some new faces you’ll come to love, and some transfer skaters to the Auburn area who will rock your world. You don’t want to miss it, so get your tickets early!

Obviously, you could come to our bake sale. January 28th, we will be selling the fruits of our labor to you, our fans, outside of Earth Fare in Auburn. Bonus – none of the baked goods will contain any artificial ingredients, so we’re (sort of) keeping you healthy too!

We all make resolutions to start the new year – to lose weight, to get fit, to be more self-confident, to spend more time with the people we care about. What if there was a way to do all of those things at once?

So what is this miracle cure for all your New Year’s ambitions? Roller derby, naturally. What did you think we’d say?!

January 4, the Burn City Rollers will be having their first recruitment night of 2012. Anyone interested in working with our team is welcome to join us at the Skate Center from 7:30-9:30. We are currently seeking not only rollergirls but refs and volunteers for non-skating official positions!

Don’t know how to skate? That’s no excuse! We’ll teach you whatever you need to know. We have starter gear available for this practice, and we’ll work on basic skating skills as well as showing our guests what a real scrimmage looks like with our scrimmage-eligible players.

If you’ve been putting off joining our team, this is the best time of year to do it! New skaters that join in January will get the most out of our off-season endurance and strength training so that they can be ready to play as soon as possible. With our season starting in March, you don’t want to waste time – the sooner you get started training, the sooner you can join us on the track!

Mark the date on your calendar, folks: January 4, 2012. 7:30-9:30. 1221 Commerce Drive, Auburn, AL. We’ll see you there – at least we better!

This season, BCR will be meeting new teams that you may not have had the pleasure of seeing us play. Some of those include Hattiesburg’s Hub City Derby Dames (with whom we’ve only ever played an away bout), the Savannah Derby Devils (our friends, whom we’ve wanted to meet on the track since last season!), and the Pensacola RollerGurlz. We will be rematching with Scenic City Roller Derby this year, as well as playing away bouts with Classic City of Athens, GA and Soul City of Augusta, GA at their own venues.

This season, we’ll offer you five home bouts and five away bouts, but with a little twist. Most of our home bouts are early in the season, running through July. That means that you won’t have to miss a single football game to keep up with Auburn’s other smashmouth sport! We’ll begin our season in March with a visit from Hub City, then will see Savannah in April, Pensacola in June and Scenic City in July. In May, we will offer you an as-yet undetermined bout, which will likely be skated for a charity benefit – and how can you beat supporting your local derby team and a worthy cause at the same time?

In the meantime, we are working hard in our off-season with our coach Trick Pony (formerly of TXRG and Derby City) so that we can be ready to give you the hard-hitting and athletic action you crave. We’ll be featuring some of your favorite BCR vets this season as well as some fresh meat you’ve never seen before. Toss out your old Chinese calendars – 2012 is the Year of the Derby Girl!
